5 Reasons Our Espadrille Is Unlike Any Other

We always knew we wanted to add an espadrille to the Margaux family. Beyond the style being a classic warm-weather silhouette that naturally mixes comfort and style, the area in southern Spain where our factory is located has a long heritage of manufacturing this very shoe.

We first introduced our espadrille to the mix with our spring Gal Meets Glam collaboration—it's a staple in founder Julia Engel's closet—and worked through countless iterations before we landed on the perfect one. Now, it has officially entered our regular collection with brand-new hues and prints.

So, how exactly is the Margaux Espadrille unlike any other?

We combined traditional techniques with modern design.

The shoe's defining characteristic—a jute wedge sole—has been around for centuries. We went straight to the source when developing ours, working with a manufacturer who weaves and stitches the jute with traditional techniques.

And while this style has a long history, it hasn't always been known for being comfortable (in fact, early espadrilles were typically thought of as "peasant footwear"). With our signature focus on comfort, we added 5mm of foam padding and leather insoles to ensure these are the summertime shoes you never want to take off.

We added some unique touches.

In decades past and present, espadrilles have been easy and breezy—but lacking some of the little design elements that make a shoe truly comfortable. We included all of our signature Margaux details, from foam padding to leather insoles, a rarity for espadrilles (they typically only have a rough canvas lining).

It's dressier than most.

For a depth of texture and more elevated feel, we opted for a nubuck upper instead of the typical canvas one. It's a seemingly small choice that we think really pays off: Our Espadrille is still casual enough to wear with your favorite jeans, but fancy enough to work for special events. Plus, the nubuck molds beautifully to your foot with wear.

The height is extremely walkable.

As with everything Margaux, it was vital that The Espadrille be comfortable and wearable for hours on end. While the wedge heel clocks in at three inches, it's technically only 2.5 (a slight platform provides the extra half-inch boost).

It's comfortable right away.

We wanted you to get them and gaux! We paid close attention to where the upper hit on the foot, placing it precisely to avoid undue rubbing or pinching, and decided to forgo a lining so the fabric is as flexible as possible.
